BlogMy Data Backup is Better Than Yours

Can your backup do this? Scan for malware and then let you test your on-prem production environment in a simulated DR cloud environment? I didn’t think so…

ASG has been providing data protection and disaster recovery services for over 30 years. As a hybrid cloud expert, we focus on three main principals of the data center: infrastructure, data and automation.

Protecting corporate data is perhaps one of the most important services IT provides. This is why ASG is helping clients modernize their data protection and data management services so they can be better prepared for today’s challenges. And with our data center experience, we understand that when it comes to backups and recovery, today’s data protection solutions should provide:

  • Cloud-aware support (for DR and archiving)
  • PII and GDPR regulation red flags
  • Automatic data tiering and lifecycle management
  • Built-in malware protection

So did you know that Cohesity scans backup data to uncover any potential vulnerability to malware and other cybersecurity threats? Yep, Cohesity scans backup files and uses Tenable.io technology to discover any vulnerability in the operating systems, data files, network devices, configurations that could lead to malware or cybersecurity attacks. The Tenable.io cloud service identifies potential exposures against entries within the regularly updated public Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database.

Cohesity’s security scan, known as CyberScan, identifies any backup that is potentially compromised. This prevents re-injecting malware into your production IT systems. And obviously backup scans do not impact production systems so you can run them regularly to keep a constant check on the backup restore state for any security vulnerability.

Now for the pièce de résistance. Disaster Recovery. We are talking about backup and recovery, and disaster recovery is an extension to this important function. And thankfully, now with the cloud, everyone can avoid operating their own expensive disaster recovery site. But this also means that applications – and their data – at your on-prem data center will have to be moved to the cloud. This is where Cohesity comes in.

Moving the data and applications is the easy part, the difficulty comes in with having to spin up and make operational all the applications in the right sequence. Often times this can involve incompatible virtual machine formats and a bunch of manual processes, scripts, dependencies and boot sequences.

Enter Cohesity’s Runbooks. Cohesity has Runbooks to design, test and operate a cloud disaster recovery. They orchestrate virtualized workloads between on-premises and public cloud data centers for disaster recovery. Your startup process can be easily designed, tested and validated so it just works when failover is needed. Cohesity Runbooks not only make DR faster, but also much more reliable and repeatable.  Runbook allow you to visualize the entire DR site process and workflow.

So, can your backup do all this?
