The Importance of Application Access and the Cost of Downtime

There has been some great IT survey data published lately. Just last week I shared some results from an IBM survey – Five Reasons Why IT Infrastructure is Lagging Behind Business Needs. And this week I found a survey from Veeam Software – Veeam Data Center Availability Report 2014: The Challenge of the Always-On Business. This survey data highlights the need to modernize data centers to ensure application availability, and both surveys identify an underlying need for technology upgrades.

Enterprise applications are the lifeblood of many organizations. Increased business globalization, increased competition for customer satisfaction, and the reliance on mobile devices are all driving application adoption and reliance. But most enterprises – at least those surveyed – are somewhat behind the curve when it comes to delivering application reliance.

Here are some interesting survey findings:

  • Only 18 percent of respondents state that they can provide immediate, always-on access to IT services and applications
  • On average, it takes 2.86 hours to recover mission-critical applications and over 8 hours for non-critical applications
  • 90 percent of organizations are currently seeking solutions to minimize downtime and provide guaranteed access to data

So what’s the average cost of application downtime to enterprise organizations? Veeam puts the cost at just over $82,000 per hour, while the Aberdeen Group estimates $110,000 per hour, and the Ponemon Institute claims the cost is closer to $205,000 per hour. These steep numbers are likely to cause headaches for many CIOs as demand for data and application access increases.

If you’re one of the 80 percent of the IT executives in the survey that have begun data center modernization initiatives, we commend you! For the rest of the enterprise organizations out there, and for the smaller organizations that rely on data and application access for their business livelihood, it’s probably time to start considering data center upgrades.
