Five Reasons Why IT Infrastructure is Lagging Behind Business Needs

We see many of our customers growing frustrated as they try to manage aging infrastructures during a time when IT growth is continuing to expand. New technologies and their requirements are pushing legacy equipment to the brink of their expectations and integrating newer infrastructure solutions into antiquated data centers is becoming a real challenge.

A recent IBM report and survey – Continuing the IT Infrastructure Conversation: Why Building a Strong Foundation Requires More Than Technology – there were several factors identified that highlight why infrastructure is lagging behind business needs.

  1. Less than 10 percent of companies report that their IT infrastructure is fully prepared to meet the demands of mobile technology, social media, big data and cloud computing. With IoT set to drive copious amounts of data into the data center and cloud computing demand on the rise, data centers today need to upgrade their infrastructure and modernize.
  2. 71 percent of all organizations say IT infrastructure plays an important role in enabling competitive advantage or optimizing revenue and profit. Technology for most organizations goes beyond simple productivity tools and lagging infrastructure makes taking advantage of the latest technologies difficult, if not impossible.
  3. 78 percent of organizations don’t have a well-defined enterprise IT infrastructure strategy and roadmap. Application mapping, as we’ve blogged recently, is a vital first step towards modernizing IT infrastructures.
  4. 87 percent of IT executives have met with little success at developing the skills to meet changing IT infrastructure needs. Some of the skills cited include cross-domain knowledge, systems management and programming, infrastructure security, open source, and application development.
  5. More than 30 percent of organizations cited the following business challenges of IT infrastructure:
  • Keeping up with increasing pace of business requirements (48%)
  • Managing upgrade cycles (42%)
  • Providing the needed storage capabilities (36%)
  • Delivering enough bandwidth (31%)
  • Maintaining service levels within IT budgets (30%)

IT enterprises are naturally challenged to provide the proper alignment of the business strategy with the existing and future infrastructure technologies. These challenges can be overcome with methodical planning and outside expertise and assistance. The challenges in developing business-technology alignment is dealing with the complexity of multi-tiered applications, the myriad legacy and ancillary support processes, and the continuous nature of change in the IT infrastructure.
