Data Fabric Solution for Cloud Disaster Recovery

Companies today need an effective disaster recovery (DR) strategy to ensure business continuity. Data, and access to it, is paramount for most organizations. Today, the cloud can be used as the backbone of a DR solution—if it’s done right.

NetApp’s Data Fabric Solution for Cloud Disaster Recovery, allows you to quickly implement a hybrid cloud-based replication solution that delivers cost-effective, flexible data protection that meets a stringent DR solution. The easy-to-deploy DR solution allows IT to retain control and security, while providing access to critical data from any location during an outage.

There are three components that we particularly like that make up the Data Fabric Solution.

  1. NetApp SnapMirror – Delivers the management capabilities needed to protect data while being able to move it between locations and storage tiers – including cloud service providers. It mirrors data from FAS and All Flash FAS controllers to the cloud, meets recovery point objectives with the capability to fail over to a specific point in time, and can be used for DR, business intelligence, and data distribution.
  2. NetApp ONTAP Cloud – Delivers the ability to provision NAS and SAN storage, maintain application performance while providing near-instantaneous point-in-time backups of data, and provides efficiency features such as data deduplication and data compression.
  3. NetApp OnCommand – Provides the visibility and control across all the resources in the Data Fabric. Cloud Manager, System Manager, and Unified Manager make management of the Data Fabric comprehensive.

As with any DR solution, it’s important that the strategy you execute meets the needs of your business. To that end, we always recommend asking yourself these six questions:

  • Have you performed a thorough business impact assessment?
  • Do you have in-house expertise or have you spoken to experienced disaster recovery planners and project managers? (We can help)
  • Have you invested the appropriate resources, budget, and time?
  • Have you planned alternate lines of communication?
  • Have you tested your plan thoroughly and frequently?
  • Do you keep your plans accurate and up to date?

In today’s complex data center environment, using the cloud as a DR strategy backbone is smart and cost effective, but like all things IT you need to do your homework and plan accordingly.
