Converged Infrastructure Solutions - Achieving Benefits through Operation Management

In late 2012, IDC shared its thoughts on converged infrastructure solutions in its predictions for this year:

Converged systems will account for over one-third of enterprise cloud deployments by 2016. Converged systems is a relatively recent approach, combining server, storage, and network systems together, along with the software to manage them. Although converged systems is still a nascent market in 2013, IDC predicts that converged systems — with a growth rate of 54% per year — will account for over one-third of enterprise cloud deployments in 2016.

Another IDC report found that the two biggest gains from employing converged infrastructure solutions were fewer management tools and improved IT staff efficiency. Clearly, these two benefits are supporting the growth in this category, and that will likely continue well into 2016. It also signals to us the importance of partnering with technology providers such as VMware and Hitachi Data Systems who understand the importance of converged infrastructure management.

In a recent VMware blog – Enabling Converged Infrastructure through Operation Management – Wayne Green discusses two areas in which Hitachi Unified Compute Platform (UCP) Pro has integrated with VMware offerings to provide smart operational management solutions.

The first is integration with VMware vSphere for better resource configuration and deployment management. As Green states:

What makes Hitachi’s approach impressive is that they have chosen to aggregate operational data from each of the converged platform components. Having this single source of data greatly simplifies the complexity of the integration, but more importantly it helps drive a user interface design that truly reflects the converged nature of the platform. This approach to integration hits right at the core of the expected benefit of converged infrastructure.

The second is integration between Hitachi’s UCP Director and VMware vCenter Operations Manager, which helps to provide operational insights for better decision making.

By leveraging vCenter Operations rich data visualization options operators can see actionable data in a way that is easiest for them to consume… The ability to look at data across domains enables IT staff to significantly reduce the time to identify problems.

The benefits of converged infrastructure solutions are becoming more widely known – and realized – as more implementations are complete; namely time and money savings, operational efficiencies and better performance. Tools for improving operational efficiencies such as what HDS provides with VMware will certainly help organizations and data centers realize all three.
