7 Reasons SMBs Should Consider a Hyperconverged Infrastructure Solution

In an earlier blog – Nutanix Xpress: Hyperconverged Infrastructure for the SMB Market – we sang the praises of convergence for the small to midsized organizations. It’s these non-enterprise organizations that often struggle the most with IT challenges; smaller IT staffs, a lack of specialized skills, and smaller budgets make it hard for SMBs to invest in new technologies, despite their advantages.

To sweeten the pot, Nutanix has published a whitepaper – The Hyperconvergence Handbook for Growing Businesses – that dives into even more reasons why an hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) makes sense for SMBs.

  1. All-in-one solution. By delivering storage, virtualization, compute and networking from one stack, Nutanix delivers a true all-in-one solution, a plug-and-play HCI that staff-strapped SMBs can really get behind. They compare their model to today’s smartphone that delivers more than just a phone, but a true communications and business mobile tool.
  2. Flexibility in deployment options. Nutanix delivers an HCI that supports multiple hypervisors, as well as simple migrations to new hypervisors. In this, SMBs won’t have to scrap any investments that they have made in virtualization, investments that loom much larger given their smaller budgets.
  3. Built-in data protection and recovery, resiliency and self-healing. With built in capabilities like local and remote snapshots as well as replication to the public cloud, data protection will not be a concern for the SMB. Two copies of all data are stored, with each residing on a different node. In the event of a drive failure, the data is still accessible from the other node. With self-healing, spare capacity is used to create new copies and restore full redundancy. With smaller, less-specialized staffs inherent with SMBs, self-healing helps protect your data.
  4. Integration with the public cloud. Tapping into the public cloud allows greater data protection as mentioned above, but also the faster deployment of IT services to remote offices, something not easily achieved in a traditional data center architecture.
  5. Single platform for all workloads. No matter what application or workload you’re running – be it emerging or business critical – HCI can deliver the support that is needed. With a single platform your IT staff won’t be stretched too thin as new technologies are required.
  6. Unified management with consumer-grade design and rich automation. A true HCI solution will offer a single view into all of the core functions, including compute, storage, virtualization, and networking. This removes the requirement for specialized skillsets, something that SMBs struggle to maintain given budgets.
  7. Cost. By eliminating the need to buy components from numerous IT vendors, SMBs can consolidate their spend into one solution. The numbers we listed above from Nutanix certainly make the financial case for HCI.
