BlogDell Technologies World 2018 – Show Wrap Up

emerging-tech-1-800x400

I recently returned from the Dell Technologies World 2018 conference, and it was quite a show! There was record attendance with roughly 14,000 people making their way through exhibits, sessions, and panel discussions.

One of the general sessions by Michael Dell and special guests positioned Dell with its family of companies – Dell EMC, Pivotal, RSA, SecureWorks, Virtualstream, VMware, and Dell itself – as an “essential infrastructure company for human progress.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning was everywhere and seemed to come up in every panel discussion. Today, data is being processed for outcomes. For example, sensors set up around houses can distinguish children from adults, inhabitants from visitors, and regular delivery people from random ones. Technology can analyze data from elderly individual’s daily routines to alert caregivers if it detects an incident outside of the norm.

As Danny Cobb, VP of Global Technology Strategy stated:

AI is going to become an active member of every team, every boardroom, every corporate activity, to bring information and analysis. It will empower employees to be more effective in their work lives.

Star products are necessary to power AI and machine learning for high performance, requiring the capacity to manage and analyze structured and unstructured data at high velocity. To this end, there were some new product announcements:

  1. Two four-socket servers—the PowerEdge 940xa and the PowerEdge 840. Both can scale to 112 cores with massive memory footprint, up to 6TB NVDIMM (non-volatile dual inline memory modules), and up to 4 GPUs in a 1:1 ratio with low latency direct attached NVMe (non-volatile memory) drives.
  2. A PowerMax Storage solution, the world’s fastest data storage array, touted to have the ability to analyze 40 million data sets in real time per array. In addition to the announcement, here’s a panel discussion on the PowerMax.

In other product news, Dell EMC is #1 in hyper-converged, according to IDC research.

Overall a great show! I look forward to seeing what these new solutions bring to the table in this next calendar year!
