Virtualizing Mission Critical Servers
Organizations with a number of mission critical applications and dedicated servers can benefit greatly from virtualization. Not only can virtualization increase utilization of existing hardware resources, it can also increase availability and fail-over options.
ASG Consulting services evaluated the benefits gained by five companies in a study conducted by VMware. Using a server TCO model to categorize and measure costs, ASG's analysis shows that server virtualization helped these companies realize:
- Hardware cost reductions ranging from 28 to 53%
- Operations cost reductions ranging from 72 to 79%
- Overall cost reductions ranging from 29 to 64%
All while actually increasing the reliability of their high availability strategies.
Virtualization Benefits
- Consolidates idle server and storage resources
- Re-deploys those resources on new projects
- Increases efficiency in operations
- Improves server management and mobility
- Improves service levels by providing zero-downtime maintenance
- Standardizes environments and improves security
- Decreases recovery time in disaster situations
- Enables high availability with less redundancy
- Adapts more efficiently to dynamic business requirements
- Allows advanced backup strategies
- Reduces costs in technical support and training
